Decades agos, even before the beginning of civilization, there has been a huge gap between males and females. Even though we all live together since the day humanity started to exist, people are still wondering and curious about the secrets inside “his” and “her” brain. It goes without saying that there’s a lot of ideas that come to our mind when we are thinking about how males and females differ in many aspects. Yet, those concepts can actually be supported by scientists and their researches.
1.Speaking Styles
From these resources, we found that female’s speaking styles are much different from male’s. There are five obvious characteristics we could discuss . First, the words of speaking , female are used to using long and difficult words to describe things. On the other hand, male’s words are simple and direct. Second, according to the word style female’s used, many indirect and difficult words are used to form long sentences. In addition, male’s are tend to be short and clear. Third, females are more emotional, depending on how the brain’s work between males and females, which makes females more emotional. Fourth, males tend to focus on the topic itself. However, women are more likely to link with other things which may not be so important to the topic. Last, males usually talk to the public, based on social (role/ status). Females tend to be a listener, also based on the information we just mentioned. Some resources indicate that women tended to be quiet, some characteristics women lacked in, like vigour and variety. As for why people used to live in the world of men dominate. From ancient times, women's value and status isn't as important as nowadays. Women just needed to raise children and take care of their families, and couldn’t touch politics or talk in public, so that form the phenomenon of nowadays. —from Chiu(邱翎鳳)
Typically, a girl chooses their friend that she can share secrets or emotion with. A boy tends to choose friends that he can do things or play with. Boys also tend to play in large groups which are hierarchical. Boys who're in the center stage will give orders and push those boys who aren't in the center stage around. So boys are using language to seize center stage, such as exhibiting their skills, showing their knowledge, challenging and resisting challenges.
2. Writing Styles
According to the Hazim Alkrisheh , Feisal Aziez and Taisir Alkhrisheh(2019), writing styles between males and females are not significantly different, except using pronouns. Also, according to what Halliday(1994) said, females tend to assume the reader knows the references of the content, so the reader needs to be involved from the females’ perspective. On the contrary, males tend to be informative in the sense that they provide more details about the subject they mentioned in the content because they assume that the reader needs background information, even if it's just a very small detail.-By Charlie(楊杰霖)
3. Ways of Thinking
Researches about 15 year-old boys’ and girls’ brains activity when they were doing tasks such as writing and spelling. Researchers examined that girls’ brains seemed to have more active rates than boys’ in the area associated with language. (Some areas of the brain that affect language work more on women than men) Females express their ideas relying on abstract thinking, while males mostly rely on visual and auditory to express their ideas or receiving information.
When difficulties occur, females usually admit their weaknesses and depend on others’ help. While male tend to insist on solving problems on their own. There are researchers pointed out males often think about one thing at one time. While females tend to focus on many kinds of things at the same time. -By Thomas(王宇謙)
4. Conclusion
In summary, we gave our audience about how gender differences affect our speaking styles, writing styles and ways of thinking, connecting those ideas with our daily life experiences. After reading these resources, our goal is to break the stereotype and give everyone a brand new perspective about gender and language. All of our group members agree about those stereotypes about females. But it doesn’t mean that all those are correct. We think that some personal characteristics depend on where they are growing up. Not every trait would show up. On the other hand, others of our group (male) also said that not every man tends to be vigorous or direct, even sometimes people might consider males are rude, casual. that was completely wrong. Last but not least, gender language may be different, but it doesn't represent everythings. -By Luke (朱致擎)
