The Grateful Dead-Capital Punishment

“We should forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged”, said Joe Abercrombie. Capital punishment is considered to be the most controversial method since human invented  the law system. For decades, people has been debating about legitimacy of capital punishment. Some proponents claim that it’s the best way to punish a sinful, while others insist on abolishing the execution, they believe that killing a person doesn’t stop “killing” itself. However, we believe otherwise. -Luke 朱致擎/Charlie 楊杰霖/Mila 邱翎鳳/Thomas 王宇謙

While some people may think our government always use capital punishment as a way to revenge, the real purpose of it should be defense people's life. According to the data provided from a USA law court, in 1972, 243 death row prisoners were entitled to leave prison temporarily. 52(21%) of them committed crime again in society. The most shocking fact is 7 of them actually killed innocent people again. Similar cases also exist in Taiwan: During the period of parole, the death row prisoner Feng-Jing-yee killed and rape an innocent female dancer and chopped her body into pieces. For those outrageous cases, we have reason to believe if capital punishment were executed completely and fastly, more innocents can be still alive in this world. The innocent’s family could have lived peacefully with them, now their families need to mourn for the death of loved ones. The opponent of capital punishment may claim killing people cannot teach others killing is wrong, however, it cannot change the fact that capital punishment is the best way to stop the notorious murder from killing again. We should put this idea into practice no matter what circumstance. -Luke 朱致擎

In human society, almost everything has a price, including the punishment. Wasting taxes on the criminal, especially on those who had or supposed to have capital punishment, is a issue that people has been discussing for a very long time. And lots of taxpayers wouldn’t feel happy when they heard their taxes are used to make some places that are safe and sound and provide free food and drink, also a sports field for those who brutally murdered someone’s beloved one, not to mention those who mass produced broken families and spread fear among the people. In recent years, some people are starting to say that death penalty is more expensive than life imprisonment, but we can’t 100% sure that’s completely true. Because if the death row inmate chose to appeal and other things that would raise the cost of the case, in this case, the cost may be higher than life imprisonment. But if a prisoner who has life imprisonment live long enough, then the cost will be higher than death penalty, so we can’t 100% sure which one is right answer. But there’s one thing we can be sure about, that is no one would want to use their taxes to keep those scum alive and give them chance to get out and continue to murder people’s beloved ones. - Charlie 楊杰霖

There is a notorious capital punishment case from Taiwan- random killing at Taipai MRT by Tzeng Jai. On May 21,2014, he killed 4 people including 1 MRT police officer, and 24 victims who were injured.  Because of this, the Taipei Supreme Court judged this case for 4 capital punishments and a limited term of imprisonment of about 144 years and 6 months. Then he was punished on May 10,2016. And  after I searched   those resources and learned that his motivation basically can organize mental illness. He claimed that he heard some voices telling him everyone would hurt him. Then caused him to commit this terrible crime. In Taiwan, early capital punishment had included beheading and shooting. Around 1912, beheading was finally canceled, but execution by shooting was still legal. About Taiwan’s capital punishment, after signing by Ministry of Justice, then after the executed was decided, this case is confirming. However, abolishing the capital punishment was still an issue in our society, because of this, Taiwan even stopped to do capital punishment for years. -Mila 邱翎鳳

Another case we would like to mention is the Cho Doo-soon case. In December, 2008, a fifty-six-year-old male kidnapped an eight-year-old girl Kim Na-young (fictitious name) on her way to school in the morning. He drugged her to a bathroom and raped her with extreme violence. Cho had tortured her during the whole process that eventually caused permanent damage on Na-young’s lower abdomen. Na-young became permanently disable after that incident. She has to use the colostomy bag for the rest of her life. She received 8 months of physical treatments after what Cho had done to her. Yet, we, or all of the people who know about this case, believe that she will need more time to fully recover mentally. Cho Doo-soon, the man who had done such a cruel thing, had only been charged for 12 years in prison due to the fact that he claimed that he was drunk and didn’t remember any of this happened. What’s worse, in 2020, after 12 years in prison, Cho was released and lived in a place which is 1 kilometer away from Na-young’s house. And of course she and her family were so terrified to hear about it. The government spent millions to spy on Cho Doo-soon. It’s terrible enough to know that this man only charged 12 years in prison for making a forever scar both inside and outside an eight-year-old girl’s body. Na-young’s family are terrified because the man is now their neighbor. And people are paying more money on a single criminal. Some people might say that Cho Doo-soon might not exactly deserve capital punishment. However, like we have mentioned in the previous paragraph, we strongly believe that death penalty is exactly meant to stop this kind of incident from happening again in human’s history. -Thomas 王宇謙

There are so many reasons and cases that we can discuss about capital punishment except what we have mentioned previously. All of those can be the foundation of our standpoints. However, we all agree that misjudgment is completely unforgivable and should not be allowed to happen even once. So we hope that the structure of the law systems should be strong enough to protect those who need justice. While forgiveness is a personal choice, our law system should take the responsibility of protecting every person in this society. Therefore, four of us believe that capital punishment is definitely needed. After all, we live in a society.  -Luke 朱致擎/Charlie 楊杰霖/Mila 邱翎鳳/Thomas 王宇謙
