Ecotourism-Wetlands

     Wetlands is one of the most crucial, delicate environment on earth that need to be well-preserved and kept away from different forms of damage. Ecosystem is similar to that of human bodies, which means there are many “organs” existing in ecosystem. The function of wetlands is equal to “kidney” that filter many contaminations, which deeply affects the water quality of near areas. Wetlands even play an important role to save human beings since it has the ability to mitigate the damage of flood and slow down the effect of global warming. In my opinion, wetlands can open for tourist purpose, but it must be protected from corporation development and personal sabotage.

    However, the existence of wetlands has been threatened for a long time even they provide many precious values. In Cigu Salt Pan Important Wetland, Tainan, construction companies tried to take advantage of the its environment, and develop precious natural resource from the wetland. This action will not only cause the disappearance of the wetland, but also destroy the homeland of Black-faced Spoonbill. In addition to corporation development, wetlands in Taiwan are also threatened by tourists. The beautiful scenery Gaomei Wetland in Taichung, attracts over 2 millions of tourists each year. Nevertheless, as Gaomei Wetland becomes more and more popular, the damage caused by tourists are arising gradually. Except tons of garbage that were left by people, the visiting of tourist disrupts the peaceful life of the creatures living there, especially fiddler crabs. Fortunately, the environmental awareness has raised in recent years, people and government start to understand how severe the situation is and try to fix the problem wholeheartedly.

    No matter how delicate the wetlands are, I believe we shouldn’t stop tourists from visiting it. The beauty and environmental value should be seen, otherwise, no one will understand how important this “organ” is. Therefore, our final goal should be keeping the balance between the tourists and education value of wetlands and the protections of it.
